She was born on March 30, 1945, to Imogene (Brenton) Carlisle and Charles Lowell Carlisle, of Petersburg, Indiana. After the death of Mr. Carlisle, Imogene married Ray Fields, whose son Jerry also joined the family. Beth earned a Master of English degree at the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Business Administration degree at Indiana University.
